Year 5 Long Term Plan - brief outline of the topics and coverage through the year.

Maths

The long term plan for maths can be found below. We are following the White Rose scheme. We will also have additional activities to offer challenge to the more able mathematicians and there will be support for any children having difficulty with some of the different topics covered. At the end of each block of learning, there will be a short assessment paper to evaluate children's learning and assess if additional sessions are required. A more detailed breakdown of what your child will be learning is available in the maths curriculum page, alongside more useful parent links

English

English work this year will include the following themes:

Autumn Term - writing to persuade, discuss and entertain. This will include using 'The Great Kapok Tree' book to write a rainforest story. We also write a newspaper article, a diary entry and a recount. We study the books 'Rose Blanche' and 'The Diary of Anne Frank'.

Spring Term - writing to inform and entertain. We write a story based on a 'Night in the National Civil War Centre' and we also write a play script. During the second half of the term, we read and learn about Space Exploration and people who have worked in this area of Science.

Summer Term - Writing to discuss and entertain. We discuss the issues arising from the visual text Tabula Rasa and we learn to write an Eco Tourism blog. In the last half of term, we write our own myths (based on Ancient Greek myths and legends) and write and perform poetry.

Spellings - Throughout the year we study homophones, suffixes, prefix words, silent letter words and the Year Five Spelling Words.

Texts that we will be reading and studying will include Varjak Paw, Stitch Head, Goodnight, Mr Tom and Ancient Greek myths.
