Helping your child at home

Reading at Home

Reading is an important skill that benefits children's development in all subjects and strengthens other literacy skills such as spelling and speaking and listening. We encourage children to read a range of genres, including non-fiction texts, by a variety of authors in order to broaden the children's vocabulary and to help them find books that they love.

Please make sure your child is reading regularly at home with an adult. It is important that they have regular opportunities to practise the reading skills learnt at school. We recommend reading for 15-20 minutes at least 4 times a week.

As your child gets older and more confident with decoding words, they may choose to read independently at home. However, it is important to ensure they are really understanding the texts they read so please do make time to read with your older children to enable them to practise their comprehension skills. There is a link below to the Literacy Shed website which gives examples of the types of questions you can ask your child when reading together.
