Intent

At Lady Bay, we believe that computing is a subject that not only stands alone but is woven throughout other subjects and should be an integral part of all learning.  A robust computing curriculum ensures that children will be digitally literate and able to join the rest of the world on its digital platform.  Children will be equipped, not only with the skills and knowledge to use technology effectively and for their own benefit, but more importantly – safely.  We want our children to understand the consequences of using the internet and also make sure that they are aware of how to keep themselves safe online.

Content

Through the study of Computing, children will develop a wide range of fundamental skills, knowledge and understanding that will actually equip them for the rest of their lives.

Covering all the areas of study required by the National Curriculum our Computing curriculum is broad and robust.  We have selected the Early Learning Goals that link most closely to the Computing National Curriculum. The FS curriculum includes ‘Understanding the World’ (technology) and children recognise that a range of technology is used in places such as homes in schools. They select and use technology for particular purposes.

In Y1-Y6 we have carefully planned half termly computing units to ensure that there is balance, progression and challenge - not just within a year group but also across the school.

Discreet lessons are used to develop depth of knowledge and skills in the areas of Information Technology, Digital Literacy and Computer Science.  These skills are then deepened as they are used to aid and enhance learning in other areas of the curriculum.

At Lady Bay we have a computer suite with 30 computers for the children to use in their Computing lessons. These computers were very generously donated to us, and this was kindly organised by a parent of a child in school.

We also have two class sets of 30 iPads available for children to use throughout the week. Each class also has their own classroom iPad. Some of these were bought using money raised by our parent association the LBSA, and some were funded by the local Co-op who raised £6000 for our school.

We would like to say a huge thank you for the generous donations, and to everyone who organised and took part in fundraising activities to enable us to enhance children's learning through ICT.

What we have been learning about .............

EYFS

EYFS children have been using technology for different purposes. They have used iPads to take digital images of work they have produced. This activity enhanced their skills and improved their confidence.

Year 1
Year 1 have used the iPads in many ways including learning how to create their own digital images and text using J2E, our online learning platform. They have also used the BeeBots to learn about programming.

Year 2
In the Autumn term, Year 2 looked at the various ways IT is used at school and in the wider world. These images show an ‘unplugged’ lesson with children developing their understanding of how bar codes and scanners work in a shop environment.

Year 3

In Year 3 we have used our coding skills to create animated quizzes in Scratch Junior.

We have used the Strip Design app on our iPads to produce our own Tutankhamun comics.

Year 4

Year 4 have learnt about different coding languages; we have used Logo to draw a variety of shapes and repeated patterns. We have also created animations to show what we have learnt about how w Roman onager works. Have a look at our multimedia Christmas poems below.

Year 5

In Year 5 we have directed, recorded and produced video documentaries; as you can see below by using green screen technology we have 'transported' ourselves into the heart of the Amazon rainforest .

Year 6

Year 6 have learnt lots of new skills including creating our own websites and 3D modelling. We now have our own 3D printer so we will soon be producing actual models of our 3D projects.
