Be ready and caring for ourselves – Year 2 fundamentals festival
Thu 12 Dec 2024Thank you to Mrs Hewitt for ensuring the year 2 children had this opportunity this week and for taking them to the festival at South Notts Academy. Mrs Hewitt said that the children absolutely loved the festival. They all took part in the triple jump, hurdles, target throwing and a balance race where the children had to run whilst balancing a brussels sprout on a spoon. To add to the enjoyment, all the events were performed whilst listening to Christmas music.

Be ready – Opal Play assembly
Thu 12 Dec 2024We used our assembly time this week to survey the children about their experiences of play at lunchtime. We asked the children to think about what they enjoyed about lunch, what they didn’t enjoy about lunch and what could be done to improve this. We asked the children to reflect on the types of play on offer out side and whether they felt there was enough variation. This was a really interesting discussion and allowed us to reflect on the feelings of the children. We finished asking them about what they would like to see on the playground. There were some excellent ideas including: quiet spaces, buddy benches arts and crafts, den building, mud kitchen and sand pit. There were some more extreme ideas such as swimming pools and ice cream stands which might be a little difficult to create spaces for. As mentioned, the children will have their say throughout this process and will be able to shape the offering we have at lunchtime. Thank you to all the parents, grandparent and businesses that have donated so far. We are all very excited to get started

Be Ready – Year 5 World War 2 Day
Thu 05 Dec 2024Wow, what a fantastic day year 5 had this week! It was fantastic to walk into the classroom and see so many artefacts laid out on all the tables. The children were taken back to what it would have been like to live during the war. They were able to touch and explore items from the time and it was clear they were all fascinated. It was great to see them all getting into character in the playground as they were learning to be wardens. It was a truly fantastic day and a great way for the children to be immersed in their learning. Thank you to Jason King who led the day and to all the parents who were able to help out too. It was unfortunate the weather was so bad as they had planned to walk to the site of the air raid shelter but this wasn’t possible.

Growing together – Year 3 D and T
Thu 05 Dec 2024The children in year 3 have been making during their D and T work this week. The children always go through the same process. They design, make improvements to that design, make the product and then evaluate it against the specification. This week, the children have been making a Shaduf to support their work in Egyptians. They have carefully cut the wood to the correct specifications and used the hot glue gun to stick it together. They all look really good and are quite effective catapults.

The effort that Zoe, Oliver and Evie put it was super and they all created excellent kites Senora Lopez set the children the challenge to create their own flag based on the flag festival in Guatemala. There were some excellent designs and I know Senora Lopez is looking forward to creating a display from them. Well done all.

Caring for the environment – assembly this week
Thu 05 Dec 2024The focus of our assembly this week was OPAL play. We started the assembly by asking the children to think about the difference between their play opportunities at break and lunch. We then asked the children to think about what works well at lunch and what works well at break. There was lots of interesting feedback during this. We then introduced the children to the concept of OPAL play and showed them a video of what a school with OPAL would be doing during their lunchtime. It sparked great excitement amongst the children. The children then discussed what sorts of activities they would like to add at lunch. The children will all have their say throughout this journey and will have weekly OPAL assemblies after Christmas where they can share which paly is working and how what could be improved further. A big change that will be happening straight after Christmas will be

Caring for the environment – assembly this week
Thu 05 Dec 2024The focus of our assembly this week was plastic. We started with the question – what are the positives and negatives of using plastic. We used this as a discussion point. The children came up with lots of positives for the uses of plastic and also lots of negatives. We looked at all the different products that use plastics too. We discussed the need for reducing the amount of plastic that we use and looked at the amount of plastic that ends up in landfill and the ocean each year. We also talked about how our litter makes it from Nottingham all the way to the ocean too. We finished thinking about ways that we could help use less plastic and the importance or reducing, reusing and recycling. A super assembly and one that supports our efforts as an Eco school

Caring for ourselves – Year 4 and Foundation Bright time
Thu 05 Dec 2024We would like to once again thank the LBSA for providing the funds for our Bright time. This week, we welcomed in Mini first aid to talk to our children in foundation and year 4. Mini first aid worked with the children in Foundation to supplement their work on people who help us. They talked to the children about the basics of first aid and how to keep safe. They then spent the rest of the day working with the children in year 4. All the children learnt CPR, what to do if someone has had a heart attack, how to treat scalds and burns and how to help someone who is choking. They were also able to ask lots of questions too. These lifesaving skills are not on the school curriculum but are part of the bespoke journey the children take through their time at Lady Bay. Another super activity funded by the LBSA.
