SEND

Special Education Needs (SEN) at Lady Bay Primary School

Intent

At Lady Bay Primary School, we support all children to reach their full potential. For this to happen, children must have good self-esteem, the knowledge that they are valued and that what they say and feel matters. Staff identify the strategies that facilitate all children to make progress, know the next steps to continued progression and ensure that, in an inclusive environment, all children, whatever their needs, are welcomed into school and supported in taking part in all aspects of school life.

SEND Team

As a team we are committed to supporting children and parents with any concerns and worries that they may have. Please contact Nicky Oakes by email via the office at any time or phone the office during school hours. Depending on your query, we may be able to answer ASAP or alternatively we will arrange a convenient time for a meeting.

Here is what some of our parents say about our SEND team at Lady Bay:

"Nicky Oakes has made it possible for both my daughter and son to thrive and enjoy going to school. She has been incredibly empathetic and proactive with ensuring our whole family feel happy and able to tackle a multitude of challenges. She's also great for a hug!" - EYFS & KS1 parent

"My son has recently been diagnosed with dyslexia. I have been impressed with the fast paced and pro-active approach from school. After a discussion with my son's teacher, I was then given a provision map from the school SENCo. This has learning objectives that will be reviewed regularly. As a parent, I feel listened to and well supported and I am grateful to all involved in supporting my son with his individual learning needs." - KS2 parent

Provision Maps

What are they?

Provision Maps provide information about children on our SEN register that require extra support and interventions to enable them to make good progress. The purpose of the maps is to inform parents about the targets their child is working towards and for staff to track the progress being made towards them.

When will I see my child's provision map?

Provision Maps are discussed with parents termly at parents evenings. Summer term transition targets are shared at the end of the summer term. Depending on need, some children will require half termly meetings to discuss progress and strategies. Should parents wish to discuss the maps in more detail they can make an appointment with their child's class teacher and/or the school SENCO via the school office.

We value parent's views and their input and will also ask that parents add their comments to the provision map so that we can build as accurate a picture of how well your child is progressing as possible and how best their needs and preferences can be met.

ELSA

At Lady Bay, Mrs Lisa Smith is our Emotional Literacy Support Assistant. An ELSA is a specialist teaching assistant with a wealth of experience of working with children. ELSAs are trained and regularly supervised by the Educational Psychologists within the Local Education Authority. An ELSA is a warm and caring person who wants to help your child feel happy in school and to reach their potential educationally. Their aim is to remove the barriers to learning and to have happy children in school and at home.

Please do talk to Mrs Smith (ELSA) if you are having any problems with your child. Problems may include - loss and bereavement, self-esteem, social skills, emotions, friendship issues, relationships, anger management, behaviour, anxiety, bullying, conflict and reluctance to come to school.

More information and leaflets can be found on the ELSA board which is situated by the front door in the lower school. Please check it regularly for well being colouring and if you need to post a worry in the worry box - Mrs Smith checks it regularly and will get back to you!

Odd Socks day - Down's Syndrome Awareness Day

Dyslexia

Dyslexia Awareness Week began 02.10.23. The children responded really well to their assemblies and reflection time around the subject of 'what it means to have Dyslexia'. As a school we supported those messages by dressing in red on 6.10.23.

KS1 parent comment -

“As parents we are very grateful for the Dyslexia awareness day. Following it, our child came home telling us all of the positives about Dyslexia, and had considered how she may also be Dyslexic. This was music to our ears as we’d also been thinking the same but didn’t want to dampen her confidence- but this week has empowered her. We feel very lucky for her to be in an environment where differences in learning are recognised and celebrated, so that she can do the same, and embrace any challenges equipped with positivity and reassurance from skilled and knowledgeable educators.”

Autism Awareness

We would like to thank Linda Jones for visiting us this week. Linda's information in her assemblies and the advice she shared was really useful. The children responded very well and asked some very reflective and thoughtful questions.

Thanks Linda!

Anxiety Training - the following training addresses anxiety as well as Autism.

Anxiety and Wellbeing

We have recognised that sometimes children need a little bit of quiet time and a chance to regulate their emotions. We now have ‘The Nest’, ‘The Cube’ and some reading huts outside to allow children to do just that.

Transition

Transition from one setting to another can be a very worrying time for children and parents alike. Whether it be transitioning to our school from a nursery/home/school or transitioning from our school to another setting or secondary school, it is very important to get an individual plan in place. Every child is different, some children will benefit from increased visits, videos and photos. Some children will need longer to become accustomed to the idea than others. It is vital that staff from each setting meet and exchange information about the children transitioning to ensure that the process is as smooth as possible for all concerned.

"I was anxious about my son starting school. It took a long time for him to settle into preschool and I was concerned that this would happen again transitioning to Foundation. Nicky and the Foundation team listened to my concerns, and, irrespective of Covid restrictions, they supported my son to visit after school, initially with me and then until I could leave him for a short period by himself. It meant that he could get to know and feel confident in his surroundings and build relationships with the teachers. These sessions meant that when it came to the transition mornings for all children, my son was able to attend with confidence." EYFS Parent
