A Fantastic Maths Day at Lady Bay - Supersizing to supply Jim's Giant with a few luxury items!

Inspired by the book 'Jim and the Giant' by Raymond Briggs, Lady Bay School took a day out of the daily grind to immerse themselves in the mathematics of scale, ratio and proportion!

It has been more than 40 years since Jim helped the Giant to improve his life with a few luxuries - like false teeth, spectacles and a wig. But 40 years is a long time - and now the Giant has come back, searching for Jim, but only able to detect a hint of Jim's DNA, here, in Lady Bay School. He  sent us a letter  - and we responded with some fantastic measuring, calculating and making skills.

Foundation looked at measuring a Giant's foot with non-standard units.

Year 1 made the Giant a magnificent new tie, calculating how long a Giant Tie would need to be.

Year 2 made the Giant a superb, colourful waistcoat.

Year 3 considered the Giant's dietary needs and made delicious Giant Smoothies.

Year 4 made beautiful Sleep Masks to help the Giant get a good night's sleep.

Year 5 made new slippers for the Giant - and Giant Cookies.

Year 6 made the Giant some new sets of false teeth - a lot of budding dentistry applicants!

Maths All Around Us

Our new maths display focuses on just some of the areas in our lives where maths plays an important role - and to show the children just how much maths they already use in everyday life!

At each side of the main board, we have different topics - a nod to maths - or at least number - vocabulary. Some of the words we use that signify a specific number of objects. Some of them are now not in common use, but the roots of some of the words link with other words that are more well-known. Also, a Times Table focus with all the information we can link to those basic multiplication tables.

Have a look at some of the features in the power point below.

Our new Maths Display - looking at how maths is involved in so many areas of our lives!
