Be Ready (Reflection) – Assembly on discrimination

This week, we talked to the children about discrimination and prejudice and the difference between the two. We looked at different scenarios and have the children the chance to discuss them. They explored whether they felt it was discrimination or prejudice. We then looked at specific examples based on the protected characteristics. I asked the children to consider how they would have felt if they had been discriminated against because of their race or gender. It was a very interesting discussion. My favourite quote was from Adalia in year 6 who, whilst talking about prejudice, stated, “We should never judge a book by its cover. We may all look different, but inside we are the same.” A really powerful quote. Finally, we finished the assembly by asking the children to think about why it is important to learn about discrimination and prejudice. We also discussed what lessons can be learnt from the past. A really powerful assembly and one with lots of important dialogue
