Be Ready – Assembly this week

In our assembly this week, we talked to the children about Black History Month. We made the link to the protected characteristic of Race. I asked the children to think about why we teach children about Black History Month. We also discussed famous people in Black History and who they could remember from previous years. With year 1 and 2, we looked at the impact of Mary Seacole and Rosa Parks why they are remembered during this month. In the year 5 and 6 assembly we looked at the life and work of Pablo Fanque and his impact during Victorian times. We finished the assembly reflecting on why they felt this assembly was important. My favourite quote from the day was from Oscar in year 5. When asked why we teach about Black History he stated, “You are asking us to reflect on the awful things that happened and to make sure we learn from it and not repeat it in the future.” Not sure I could have put it better myself.
