Be Kind – Assembly this week
In our assembly this week, we asked the children to think about what their life would be like if they were told that they were not allowed to go to school. It generated lots of interesting discussion and most came around to the idea that it might be nice to be at home for a while, but they would eventually get bored and want to learn again. We then asked them to think about what it would be like if only girls were not allowed to go to school. This raised a lot of debate and they were quick to reference the fact that this would be discriminating against the protected characteristic of sex. We then made the link to the fact that it is Nobel Peace Prize day on the 10th December and we showed them what happened to Malala Yousafzai. The children were amazed that only 13 years ago girls were not allowed to go to school in this region in Pakistan and even more that 215 million children worldwide do not go to school. A powerful assembly and one that provoked a lot of discussion and reflection.
