Progression in History
Some of the topics we learn about.....
EYFS
During Remembrance week, the children read 'Where the Poppies Now Grow' and talk about the significance of the story. They think about how this links to their lives today. EYFS also learn about old and new emergency vehicles and, during Black History month, significant people who have shaped our country.
Year 1
During Year One, children think about toys and transport in the past and castles. They make comparisons and think about how things are different or similar to today. They consider why Amelia Earhart is famous and begin to ask simple questions about the past. We also begin to consider how things have changed over time.
Year 2
In Year 2, children learn about The Great Fire of London and The Victorians. They ask their own enquiry questions, learn how to sequence events on a timeline and then use what they have researched to present their findings. During their Victorian's topic, children have the opportunity to complete a local study in Lady Bay.
Year 3
Year 3 study Ancient Egypt thinking about who Howard Carter was, what an archaeologist does and how artefacts can teach us about the past. They also investigate the Stone Age in Britain.
Year 4
Year 4 learn about crime and punishment from the Anglo Saxons to the present including the Magna Carta, chronology and Simon De Montfort. They also develop their enquiry skills during their investigation into Roman Britain.
Year 5
In Year 5, the children enjoy learning about the English Civil War. They experiment with timelines, reasoned judgements and visit the Civil War museum. They develop their ability to enquire further during their topics on World War Two in Britain and Ancient Greece.
Year 6
The Maya Civilisation. Year 6 immerse themselves in the enquiry question ‘What have the Maya done for us?’ Using research skills gathered over the years, they investigate different aspects of the Maya, develop hypotheses to test, independently construct timelines and present their findings as an essay. Finally, we investigate Viking and Anglo Saxon Britain building on what was learned in Year 4.
