Mathematics

Aims and intent

The 2014 National Curriculum for Maths aims to ensure that all children:

•         Become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics

•         Are able to reason mathematically

•         Can solve problems by applying their Mathematics

At Lady Bay Primary School, these skills are embedded within maths lessons and developed consistently over time. We believe in the importance of providing varied opportunities for children to learn and practise new skills in order to build fluency and confidence in mathematical concepts. We believe in the importance of allowing children to use this fluency in context to embed learning, and aim to provide Reasoning and Problem-Solving opportunities in teaching and independent learning. We are committed to ensuring that children are able to recognise the importance of Maths in the wider world and that they are also able to use their mathematical skills and knowledge confidently in their lives in a range of different contexts. We want all children to enjoy Mathematics and to experience success in the subject, with the ability to reason mathematically. In line with our school values, we are committed to developing children’s curiosity about the subject, creating opportunities for enjoyment of mathematics and fostering the determination to succeed.

Maths Curriculum

As a school we follow the White Rose Maths curriculum to ensure coverage of curriculum ovjectives and ready to progress criteria, and break learning down into manageable small steps that are rich with opportunity for reasoning. In school we use White Rose workbooks which present the work in an engaging way with lots of different variation in how numbers are represented. The long term plans below map out what is covered during the year for each year group, and the termly overviews break down the long term plan into the individual small steps of learning children will make, giving an idea of the vocabulary and representations children will be using in their learning.

A Fantastic Maths Day at Lady Bay – Supersizing to supply Jim’s Giant with a few luxury items!

Inspired by the book ‘Jim and the Giant’ by Raymond Briggs, Lady Bay School took a day out of the daily grind to immerse themselves in the mathematics of scale, ratio and proportion!

It has been more than 40 years since Jim helped the Giant to improve his life with a few luxuries – like false teeth, spectacles and a wig. But 40 years is a long time – and now the Giant has come back, searching for Jim, but only able to detect a hint of Jim’s DNA, here, in Lady Bay School. He  sent us a letter  – and we responded with some fantastic measuring, calculating and making skills.

Foundation looked at measuring a Giant’s foot with non-standard units.

Year 1 made the Giant a magnificent new tie, calculating how long a Giant Tie would need to be.

Year 2 made the Giant a superb, colourful waistcoat.

Year 3 considered the Giant’s dietary needs and made delicious Giant Smoothies.

Year 4 made beautiful Sleep Masks to help the Giant get a good night’s sleep.

Year 5 made new slippers for the Giant – and Giant Cookies.

Year 6 made the Giant some new sets of false teeth – a lot of budding dentistry applicants!

Have a look at the results of our labours!!

White Rose Topic Booklets

As children work through the maths topics, there may be some that they find more difficult to understand than others. This might mean that they work more slowly through the calculations – or that there are more errors. Children will get support in school to try to overcome these difficulties, but in 2025, we have taken the decision that the Topic Booklets can be sent home at the end of the topic for those children who might need  time to work on the more challenging questions or who just need another look over what they have done. Of course, we hope that parents and carers might be able to offer support , but there is no pressure or expectation that children will complete all the questions – it is just an option for extra help with the tricky bits of maths!
