Our Leadership Opportunities

Our Leadership Opportunities

At Lady Bay School, we have extensive opportunities to take leadership roles. As closely as possible, we aim to mirror the real world of work where children have to apply for positions and have to provide a reference. The children are given training to undertake their role as well as a role description and responsibilities.

At the end of the year, the children are rewarded for their hard work and overall positive contribution to the school community.

All leadership roles undertaken are tracked to ensure we give all children the opportunity to take part in an opportunity through their time at Lady Bay.

We give the children in Year 6 the opportunity to apply for leadership roles in Behaviour and Curriculum. These roles are incredibly important and help us to actively shape the way we move the school forward.

The Behaviour Leaders (pictured left below) have undertaken learning walks in classrooms and during assemblies and given feedback on the types of behaviour they saw. They have walked around at playtime and lunchtime to look at the types of behaviour displayed and given feedback to members of the Senior Leadership team on what they think would improve behaviour. They were also instrumental in some of the changes made when we introduced OPAL into school.

The Curriculum Leaders (Pictured right below) have also have a very important role in looking at what is working well in the curriculum and what changes could be made to make it even better. The have looked at different learning styles and how these are incorporated into teaching and learning. They have given feedback on curriculum content and enjoyment in lessons.

Play is very important to us at Lady Bay. We have successfully implemented OPAL into our lunchtimes and more information about that can be found on the OPAL page. We have worked hard to ensure the children know how to play effectively and how to ensure we have positive lunchtimes.

As part of the leadership opportunities, children in year 5 and 6 have the chance to apply to be Play Leaders. These are offered quite a lot of training on what effective play looks like and how to facilitate this at lunchtime. The Play leaders all have different zones that they work in to ensure the other children are playing well together and following the OPAL charter. The Play Leaders also lead different games too.

Play Leaders usually undertake their role 1 day per week but some choose to do this more often.

The Year 6 children, from each School Council in Rushcliffe, have the opportunity to be part of the Pupil Parliament held at County Hall. This offers the pupils an opportunity to debate current issues and give feedback to councillors.

This is a great way to reinforce the British Values and Protected Characteristics and ensures our School Council members have a voice and Council level.

As part of our Spanish offering, children have the opportunity to apply to be Spanish Ambassadors. The Ambassadors are given training at the start and input each week from Senora Lopez. This supports them teaching Spanish to the year 1 and 2 children.

This is an excellent opportunity, which gives the children the confidence to stand up in front of other children and also reinforces their understanding of Spanish.

At the start of each year, we give the children the opportunity to apply to be Site Monitors. The aim of the Site Monitors is to help keep the site litter free. This is always a challenge at Lady Bay as so much litter blows on to the the school site from Trent Boulevard (which is a busy main road).

The children all take the role very seriously and are always very keen to ensure they are doing their bit to help the environment. Our Site Monitors give up 1 lunchtime per week to support the school and are a very valuable member of the school community.

Children in year 3, 4 and 5 have the opportunity to apply to become a librarian. This is a very important role as it ensures the books are always accessible to children at all ages. We have two libraries in school, which mean the librarians are always very busy ensuring the space is tidy and inviting.

The librarians also give up 1 lunchtime per week to fulfil their role.

As part of our leadership opportunities, our Year 6 children are paired with our new Foundation children each year. The Year 6 children are always very excited about this and it has become a ‘right of passage’ at Lady Bay.

As a Year 6 Buddy, the children are expected to help the children to settle in, they show them how to eat sensibly in the hall and also play with them outside. They are also a trusted friend, who they can go to if they need help.

It is a magical thing we do at Lady Bay and one that the children from both Year 6 and Foundation get a huge amount from.
