Aims and intent
The 2014 National Curriculum for Maths aims to ensure that all children:
• Become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics
• Are able to reason mathematically
• Can solve problems by applying their Mathematics
At Lady Bay Primary School, these skills are embedded within maths lessons and developed consistently over time through a curriculum that consolidates and builds upon prior knowledge. We believe in the importance of providing varied opportunities for children to learn and practise new skills in order to build fluency and confidence in mathematical concepts. We encourage children to use this fluency in context to embed learning, and aim to provide reasoning and problem-solving opportunities in teaching and independent practice. We are committed to ensuring that children are able to recognise the importance of maths in the wider world and that they are also able to use their mathematical skills and knowledge confidently in their lives in a range of different contexts. We want all children to enjoy mathematics and to experience success in the subject, with the ability to reason mathematically. In line with our school values, we are committed to developing children’s curiosity about the subject, creating opportunities for enjoyment of mathematics and fostering the determination to succeed.
White Rose Maths
Online learning resources that follow our school’s agreed Long Term planning for maths. During the lockdown period, and any subsequent home learning period during you may have found your class teacher providing daily maths activities from White Rose. Daily videos and some activities can be accessed here for free, to accompany the work set by your class teacher.
BBC Bitesize
Provides videos, quizzes, articles and practice activities from BBC Bitesize and partners to help you through the current term. Materials are provided for all year groups, including Primary Catch-Up lessons.
Twinkl
A home learning hub, featuring activities for all subjects across all age groups. Also features home learning guides and tips for home-schooling different subjects.
Topmarks
A huge range of maths and English games, split into Foundation, KS1 and KS2 age ranges.
NumBots
NumBots is a fantastic resource for younger learners to practise counting, addition and subtraction. Year 1 and Foundation have been provided logins to use this game, and Y2+ children can access it through using their TTRockstars logins.
Times Tables Rockstars
An exciting way to learn and practise times tables, featuring individual training and competitive multiplayer. Can be played online, or by downloading the free mobile app. If your child has forgotten their login details, please contact the school office.
Maths Curriculum
As a school we follow the White Rose Maths curriculum to ensure coverage of curriculum ovjectives and ready to progress criteria, and break learning down into manageable small steps that are rich with opportunity for reasoning. In school we use White Rose workbooks which present the work in an engaging way with lots of different variation in how numbers are represented. The long term plans below map out what is covered during the year for each year group, and the termly overviews break down the long term plan into the individual small steps of learning children will make, giving an idea of the vocabulary and representations children will be using in their learning.

Maths Day 2026
To enrich our curriculum offering, the children of Lady Bay participated in a ‘Theme Park Maths Day.’ The aim of the day was to encourage the reasoning and problem-solving skills of the children through an engaging, meaningful and real-life context. The pupils worked independently or in small groups to tackle budgeting, shape, area and perimeter problems, before mapping out their own theme park. In the afternoon, all classes combined with another year group to collaborate across a range of maths and craft activities. Overall, a great day was had by all and a deeper understanding of where maths fits within the real world was obtained.
White Rose Topic Booklets
As children work through the maths topics, there may be some that they find more difficult to understand than others. This might mean that they work more slowly through the calculations – or that there are more errors. Children will get support in school to try to overcome these difficulties, but in 2026, we have taken the decision that the Topic Booklets can be sent home at the end of the topic for those children who might need time to work on the more challenging questions or who just need another look over what they have done. Of course, we hope that parents and carers might be able to offer support , but there is no pressure or expectation that children will complete all the questions – it is just an option for extra help with the tricky bits of maths!
