Special Education Needs (SEN) at Lady Bay Primary School

Intent

At Lady Bay Primary School, we support all children to reach their full potential. For this to happen, children must have good self-esteem, the knowledge that they are valued and that what they say and feel matters. Staff identify the strategies that facilitate all children to make progress, know the next steps to continued progression and ensure that, in an inclusive environment, all children, whatever their needs, are welcomed into school and supported in taking part in all aspects of school life.

Support Plans

What are they?

Support Plans provide information about children on our SEN register that require extra support and interventions to enable them to make good progress. The purpose of the plans is to inform parents about the targets their child is working towards and for staff to track the progress being made towards them.

When will I see my child’s support plan?

Support Plans are discussed with parents termly at parents evenings. Summer term transition targets are shared at the end of the summer term. Depending on need, some children will require half termly meetings to discuss progress and strategies. Should parents wish to discuss the plans in more detail they can make an appointment with their child’s class teacher via the school office.

We value parent’s views and their input and will also ask that parents add their comments to the support plan so that we can build as accurate a picture of how well your child is progressing as possible and how best their needs and preferences can be met.

ELSA

At Lady Bay, we are lucky enough to have two Emotional Literacy Support Assistants, Mrs Smith and Mrs Latham. An ELSA is a specialist teaching assistant with a wealth of experience of working with children. ELSAs are trained and regularly supervised by the Educational Psychologists within the Local Education Authority. An ELSA is a warm and caring person who wants to help your child feel happy in school and to reach their potential educationally. Their aim is to remove the barriers to learning and to have happy children in school and at home.

Please do talk to either Mrs Smith or Mrs Latham if you are having any problems with your child. Problems may include – loss and bereavement, self-esteem, social skills, emotions, friendship issues, relationships, anger management, behaviour, anxiety, bullying, conflict and reluctance to come to school.

More information and leaflets can be found on the ELSA board which is situated by the front door in the lower school. Please check it regularly for well being colouring and if you need to post a worry in the worry box – Mrs Smith checks it regularly and will get back to you!

Transition

Transition from one setting to another can be a very worrying time for children and parents alike. Whether it be transitioning to our school from a nursery/home/school or transitioning from our school to another setting or secondary school, it is very important to get an individual plan in place. Every child is different, some children will benefit from increased visits, videos and photos. Some children will need longer to become accustomed to the idea than others. It is vital that staff from each setting meet and exchange information about the children transitioning to ensure that the process is as smooth as possible for all concerned.

“I was anxious about my son starting school. It took a long time for him to settle into preschool and I was concerned that this would happen again transitioning to Foundation. Nicky and the Foundation team listened to my concerns, and, irrespective of Covid restrictions, they supported my son to visit after school, initially with me and then until I could leave him for a short period by himself. It meant that he could get to know and feel confident in his surroundings and build relationships with the teachers. These sessions meant that when it came to the transition mornings for all children, my son was able to attend with confidence.” EYFS Parent
