Intent for English
Through our English and wider curriculum we intend to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written language, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.
We intend that our English curriculum will enable all pupils to:
•read easily, fluently and with good understanding;
•develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information;
•acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language;
•appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage;
•write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences;
•use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas;
•be competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.
Our aim is that, by the end of their primary education, all pupils will leave Lady Bay with the life-long literacy skills that will enable them to participate fully as a member of society during their young adulthood and beyond.
Reading
Please see our Phonics Page
Reading is an important skill that benefits children’s development in all subjects and strengthens other literacy skills such as spelling and speaking and listening. We encourage children to read a range of genres, including non-fiction texts, by a variety of authors in order to broaden the children’s vocabulary and to help them find books that they love.
Please make sure your child is reading regularly at home with an adult. It is important that they have regular opportunities to practise the reading skills learnt at school. We recommend reading for 15-20 minutes at least 4 times a week.
As your child gets older and more confident with decoding words, they may choose to read independently at home. However, it is important to ensure they are really understanding the texts they read so please do make time to read with your older children to enable them to practise their comprehension skills. There is a link below to the Literacy Shed website which gives examples of the types of questions you can ask your child when reading together.
Whole school reading challenge.
Each class has been set a target number of reads for each term, based on each child reading 4 times a week at home.
Our wonderful school council helped to choose the final reward…a book and pyjama day!
So far, most classes are on track to reach or surpass their termly reading target!
Well done everyone!
This year we celebrated world book day with an ‘Extreme Read’ competition!
The children were asked to take a photo of themselves reading in unusual places. The winners were presented with a £10 Waterstones voucher provided by Luxfer.
The runners up were awarded a badge and the opportunity to choose a book for the non fiction library, funded again by Luxfer.
