Global Citizenship and Charity Partnerships

At Lady Bay School, children are encouraged to develop the knowledge, skills and values they need to engage and contribute positively to the world. They are helped to understand they everyone has rights, but along with these rights people also have ‘responsibilities’. Our curriculum themes are linked to Global Citizenship concepts so that children can develop an understanding of these concepts in ‘real-life’ and meaningful contexts.

In addition, we have formed partnerships with three locally based charities. Through working with these charities and through fundraising for these charities,  we aim to support children in making a real difference to other people’s lives.

We fundraise for numerous events throughout the school year, but the three charities we work closely with are Footprints, Education for the Children and Guide Dogs for the Blind.

You can read more about each of the charities under the headings below.

Footprints Conductive Education Centre  is a charity close to our hearts. The charity has provided additional support for many children in our local community and their families.

Their mission is to provide Conductive Education and other services to help children with mobility and communication problems develop the skills they need to thrive and achieve their potential. They are committed to creating a safe, positive, supportive and fun environment where parents receive practical assistance, information and training to help them support their child in their own home.

Tokyo Challenge

Staff and children raised an incredible £3650 for Footprints by walking and running 7665 miles in 4 weeks. Our aim was to reach Tokyo, but we completely smashed that target.

It was lovely to welcome some of the Footprints staff who thanked the children in assembly and presented certificates. Our children also heard how the money would be used to support children and their families.

Founder Sophie McKee travelled from West Bridgford to Guatemala in 2002 to volunteer at a school she discovered was on the brink of collapse due to lack of funding. She began fundraising to ensure that the 75 students that were to be left without a school could continue their education. This was the start of the Education For The Children Foundation (EFTC).

Driven by a commitment to equal opportunities, the Education for the Children Foundation has worked with young people and families from the Jocotenango area in Guatemala since 2003 to access quality education, nutritious food, healthcare and social support. Through a highly individualised holistic approach they strive to empower young people with the skills and confidence to be successful in their chosen careers.

The charity set up The School of Hope (La Esperanza) in 2005, a school which  currently teaches 463 students from Prepa at 4 years old through to 9th grade where they graduate ready for high-school or employment at around 14 years old.

Lady Bay School shares the charities vision that every child should have a right to education. Our aim is to help support The School of Hope through fundraising,  whilst also giving children at both schools the opportunity to share their cultures, language and learning through virtual meetings, emails and letters.

More information about Education for the Children can be found on their website

In July 2021, we raised over £1000 for the School for Hope through our ‘Guatemala’ day. Musicians from the Birmingham Conservatoire led a Marimba extravaganza for each year group. The children also had a wonderful time singing along to the Spanish guitar, played by Ricky Martinez from Mas Y Mas. Children also attended workshops led by charity workers from Education for the Children.

Guatemala Day

The Guatemala Day was a huge success and featured in the local news. We raised over £1000 for children attending the School for Hope.

Terry has been a friend of Lady Bay School since 2015. We first met him with his previous guide dog, Emmett and the children loved learning all about Emmett’s duties. Terry has taken numerous assemblies and has raised awareness of what life is like for blind people. Terry lost his sight due to a head injury playing football when he was younger.

Since Emmett retired in 2018, Terry has been bringing in his new guide dog Charlie to see the children. Terry and Charlie live locally, but they travel around the country as Ambassadors for the Guide Dog Charity. Terry always encourages the children to come and say hello when he is out and about in West Bridgford, and the children understand that they mustn’t distract Charlie when he has his working harness on.

The children are involved in annual fundraising for Guide Dogs for the Blind.

We use the OXFAM framework for Global Citizenship. Concepts are interwoven through our thematic Curriculum at Lady Bay Primary School.
